Newer/Low kms directly correlates with reliability
A car’s model year and mileage is always shown so clearly on every car website and many people put a lot of importance on them.
Clients will often tell me they want a certain year or odometer. When I ask them why, the main reason they say is reliability.
Of course, everything being equal, a newer/low kms car will be marginally more reliable,
Mechanical Inspections are foolproof
Many mechanics offer pre-purchase inspection services.
These services are popular and important to check a used car before purchase. (I would always recommend it)
They’re done by a professional and they’ll be more thorough than an average person but it does not mean they’re foolproof.
Dealership cars tend to be reliable
Buying a car from a dealer means it will be safe and reliable for the long term. In NSW, dealers are required by law to give a 3 month guarantee on the used cars they sell. This guarantee leads people believe it’s a guarantee on the car’s long term reliability.
However a recent report by the Consumer Policy Research Centre has shown it not be the case with 44% of all used cars from dealers have some issue within 1 year of ownership.
